Friday, I came down with what I’ll call the Uni-crud. Every semester it seems the kids get sick with some sort of cold/upper respiratory thing. Pretty sure it’s not Covid, as it seems to have passed as quickly as it came on. However, I am laying low to make sure this doesn’t move to my lungs; the last thing I need is pneumonia.
Classes are going well, but somehow I feel behind already. It’s dumb for sure, but here we are. Last Wednesday, a kid who’s been absent three days told me, he’s been absent because he’s diabetic and has been rationing his insulin. I’m not sure of the financial/familial situation, but I do know no one should have to live like that. I suggested they contact their doctor to see if there was some sort of financial assistance offered, and I contacted student advocacy through the dean of students. I know the Uni has resources for this kind of things.
It made me sick to my stomach and I cried. There but for the grace of the gods go I, you know? I’ve ranted and wailed about the injustice of the American health care system. And, a kid—fuck me. Uni freshmen should be worried about their homework, who’s going to win the football game, and where to turn up over the weekend not if they’ll have enough medicine for the month.
While I got an email from the dean of students, I don’t know yet if the kid has been contacted and helped. The Uni probably can’t tell me due to HIPPA, and I understand that. I just want the kid to be okay and get the help they need.
The house repairs are about completed. There needs to be a recheck by the appraiser. I have some classes to do, and get some insurance on the place. Then I think we can get this thing done.
The humidity around here has dropped exponentially, and even if it is 85* , it’s not like breathing soup. Overnights are in the mid 60s. Can’t wait to shut off the AC.
Nothing else exciting to report; we’re all getting on fine. I’ll take that—gratefully!
