pride moment June 22, 2022
Yesterday, I saw a powerful video. It begins with a person who has their back to the camera. They are wearing a black T-shirt. The wording says VETERAN.
The person turns to the camera, and the audience sees that the person is what might be construed as a very butch woman. Nevertheless, on the front of her T shirt is the progress flag ( look it up if you don’t know) in each stripe of the rainbow portion are some words:
I swore
An oath
To fight
Enemies
Foreign &
Domestic
The song in the background is “Unstoppable” by Asia. The soldier looks dead at the camera, lowers her head, and raises her hand. In an instant fatigue hat appears, she raises her head, and she salutes. Never. Breaking. Eye contact with the camera.
Y’all, I busted out in tears. Just typing this is making me well up. I’ve never served, and I’ve never had to deal with a bunch of backward ass bureaucrats making decisions about who I can love. But this woman, I would March beside her to defend her choice of partner AND body autonomy. This is my Army. I messaged her to say thank you. She replied that my ally-ship means everything. We’re all in this together, and we’re all we have.
Humbled beyond measure,
