I talked with my husband about my anxiety over the idea of joining a gym and he understood. He also said that we needed to get serious about being healthier. We can't just walk when we're able to and hope whatever diet we try to stick to picks up the slack. It might've worked somehow 8 years ago, but we are both older than we were then and need to be thinking of getting fit and in shape to prevent problems in the future.
He was talking about getting a recumbent exercise bike and a few other "machines" that would cost about the same as 2 memberships to the gym. Not sure where we're going to put it all, or if we're able to get it up to our second-floor apartment. Since we don't have much room, we're just going with the exercise bike for now… which is to arrive sometime next week.
We're still hoping to walk when we can, but now we won't feel so bad if the weather is really cold or crappy outside.
Next, we'll likely discuss our diets and how to change them. And maybe I'll find the courage to ask my doctor for help (or at least a referral).
