| Local doctor accused of animal cruelty out of jail

BAY HARBOR ISLAND, Fla. (WSVN) -- A local doctor has been arrested, accused of beating a dog to death with a hammer.
According to Bay Harbour Islands Police, a Boxer was in the front yard of a home located at 10331 Boardview Drive, where it was beaten repeatedly with a hammer and screwdriver.
According to the police report, several witnesses observed the dog tied to a tree and an older white male repeatedly striking it with a hammer. The witnesses go on to say that the man, alleged to be Dr. Isaias Lerner, also impaled a screwdriver into the area of the dog's ear and throat. Witnesses said the dog was yelping before it passed away and had brain matter emitting from it's head.
"To do harm to an animal, to do harm to anybody, and as a physician, it disgraces my profession. It's a disgrace," commented Dr. Albert Morjaim, who lives in the area.
Police arrested Lerner and charged him with animal cruelty with attempt to kill.
According to police, Isaias was identified through a photo line-up, and they said he gave a verbal and written confession.
Neighbors were left stunned. "I'm a dog lover, so I'm shocked," said a neighbor who preferred to remain anonymous.
The accused doctor is now out of jail but has not been reached for a comment.
